What Are Psalms?

The book of Psalms is a collection of 150 prayers and songs in the Bible. They praise, lament, and express many different emotions.

The psalms were written by a variety of authors in different situations of life, each inspired by God. Most of them are written in poetic form and use words to express and evoke an emotional response.

People have used the psalms as a source of comfort during difficult times for thousands of years and can be particularly helpful when dealing with anxiety and fear.

How Psalms Can Help with Anxiety and Fear

Many of the psalms speak directly to feelings of anxiety and uncertainty. Reading the psalms can be an effective tool for managing anxiety because they provide a source of inspiration, comfort, courage, and hope in trying times.

They remind you that you are not alone in your suffering. Since the beginning of time, people have been struggling with these emotions.

The psalms provide words of reassurance and strength in the face of uncertainty. They remind you that God is your faithful protector, guiding and sustaining you through difficult times, if you will place your trust in Him. The psalms often include expressions of trust in God’s goodness and faithfulness – a reminder that He will never abandon you, no matter the situation you find yourself in.

The Bible is filled with many passages that can lend comfort and solace when you are struggling with anxiety and fear. By immersing yourself in these beautiful passages, you can be reminded that God is always with you even when it feels like you are all alone.

Consider and answer me, O Lord my God; Enlighten my eyes, or I will sleep the sleep of death, And my enemy will say, “I have overcome him,” And my adversaries will rejoice when I am shaken.
But I have trusted in Your lovingkindness; My heart shall rejoice in Your salvation. I will sing to the Lord, Because He has dealt bountifully with me.

You will make known to me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; In Your right hand there are pleasures forever.

Psalm 18:1-6

I love You, O Lord, my strength.
The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, My God, my rock, in whom I take refuge; My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.

The cords of death encompassed me; The floods of ungodliness made me afraid. The cords of Sheol surrounded me; The snares of death confronted me.
In my distress I called upon the Lord, And cried to my God for help; He heard my voice out of His temple, And my cry for help before Him came into His ears.

Psalm 18:16-19

He sent from on high, He took me; He drew me out of many waters. He delivered me from my strong enemy, And from those who hated me, for they were too mighty for me.

One thing I have asked from the Lord, that I shall seek: That I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, To behold the beauty of the Lord and to meditate in His temple.
For in the day of trouble He will conceal me in His tabernacle; In the secret place of His tent He will hide me; He will lift me up on a rock. And now my head will be lifted up above my enemies around me, And I will offer in His tent sacrifices with shouts of joy; I will sing, yes, I will sing praises to the Lord.
Hear, O Lord, when I cry with my voice, And be gracious to me and answer me. You have said, “Seek My face.” My heart says to You, “Your face, O Lord, I shall seek.” Do not hide Your face from me, Do not turn Your servant away in anger; You have been my help; Do not abandon me nor forsake me, O God of my salvation!
Though my father and my mother have forsaken me, Yet the Lord will take me up.
Teach me Your way, O Lord, and lead me in a level path because of my foes. Do not give me up to the desire of my adversaries, For false witnesses have risen against me, And such as breathe out violence.
